I was talking with someone yesterday about the horrific shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford. We both expressed dismay at the shooting and concern about the ongoing vitriolic and polarized politics we’ve seen of late.
“How awful that a nine-year-old (and five others) had to die,” I said. “Maybe now this will damage beyond repair the credibility of Tea Party extremists.”
“Actually,” Y. replied, “the Tea Party extremists are the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats. When I saw Republicans turn the Vietnam War against Kerry and make it a plus for Bush, I knew just what brilliant strategists the Republicans are.”
He has a point, there.
He went on: ” The Tea Party and Palin have always been an embarrassment to Republicans. Palin served her purpose for this last election. This shooting may give the Republican Party a palatable reason to disavow Palin, the Tea Party and the extreme right wing. Which could only hurt Democrats in the end.”
Of course, the Tea Party is fund-raising off this tragedy. And Palin’s Facebook handlers are removing comments critical of Palin as quickly as they’re posted, but somehow leaving shocking and crazy posts like:
“It’s ok. Christina Taylor Green {the 9-year-old killed} was probably going to end up a left wing bleeding heart liberal anyway. Hey, as ‘they’ say, what would you do if you had the chance to kill Hitler as a kid? Exactly.”(citation: http://obamalondon.blogspot.com/2011/01/inexplicable-edits-on-sarah-palins.html)
What kind of person would say such a thing?
Terrible things are going on in our political system and among our people. Shameful things. People are no longer even pretending to be civil and leading the way are some of our media institutions.
I’m an ashamed and embarrassed American. It’s getting harder to be a proud one.
