{a simple day}

March 15, 2013

Who doesn’t love a special occasion? And going to special places: a restaurant, a city, a vacation.

But a recent hint of spring reminded me that the most special days are sometimes the simplest.

The sun was out and a friend and I sat under the blue-blue sky at a coffee shop and just chatted. I never opened the paper. The sun warmed our backs as we talked about this and that. People drove by, walked past us. Kids laughed, a dog barked.

Life was going on all around us and I was reminded that just being able to draw breath in the sunshine was a gift.

Yellow roses were blooming in the backyard, so I picked a posey for the house and enjoyed their reflection in the mirrored vase.

Later, Riley helped me grade papers and reminded me that a nice nap on a quiet afternoon is always a good idea.

Cute as pie. Is pie cute?

So I took a little break. Made a cup of decaf, lit a candle, opened a book.

I’ve eaten at fine restaurants, traveled to exotic places, and done exciting work.

But nothing is as beautiful as a simple day filled with love and life.

Nothing.

  1. Agree 100 million percent. My husband has taught me that more than anyone – the peace and relaxation of sitting in our own backyard is priceless.

  2. I find a day spent in the sun enjoying food with good friends is the top experience!

Such a great reminder to stop and smell the proverbial roses and enjoy life’s most quiet moments – a skill we ladies can definitely use as we try to quiet the more rocky times of menopause!

  4. I agree with you! Some of the best times I’ve ever had in my life have been spent in my own backyard. Peaceful, serene…ahhhhhh….

What a nice reminder of how great little things are. Great pictures, too–and yes, your puppy is cute as pie!

  6. Thanks for this reminder to look around at the beauty that’s already there.

This post is a perfect example of a perfect moment. I hope you’ll consider linking it to March’s Perfect Moment Monday when it comes out March 25. I’ll try to remind you!

Nice perspective! I’ve recently been visiting ancient Rome with Cleopatra’s daughter . . . and I’ve been doing it on a sunny day.

This was a terrific reminder. I’ve had a few of those moments during the past week. I must not forget them.
