Beware little-known side effect

August 16, 2010

I have a friend, a long-time friend. Someone I know really well.

She’s a strong person, but she’s always been a girly-girl at heart. Someone who enjoys nice things: clothes, homes, art and especially nice jewelry. Someone who isn’t really into roughing it. Definitely not a camper.

We have a lot in common.

Last week, she traveled to the northeast to spend time with her family. After a few days, she called me.

Her sole purpose for the call was to describe an “insect” she’d seen in New Jersey. She spent about 10 minutes describing it in detail, its dimensions, its appearance and how she and her brother discovered it was actually a moth. She was fascinated by it.

She then sent me this photo so I could see for myself.

My husband (who knows and loves her) asked, incredulously, “You mean she called you just to describe this moth? and then she sent you a picture of it?”

Very out of character.

I wondered if her new fascination with nature and insects is a side effect of the chemo she’s on for her (treatable) cancer.

She says it’s not.

But I’m not so sure.

Note to my friend: Should you see an interesting roach out there? Skip the photo, ok? Unless you can smoke it.

I see this as a spiritual awakening especially SINCE she has had cancer. Not a side effect of the CHEMO but of the CANCER. This may have been the ONLY time in her life that she has met members of the BUG species up close and personal. This is significant because there are more bugs than any other living create in the world and bugs are usually small and over looked. To actually take this much time, energy and effort to commune with one of our bug friends is super as far as I am concerned!

I personally have loved bugs and even played with them as a child in Central America where they were interesting, abundant and colorful.

Here is the lesson of moth according to Native American practice.

MOTH HEIGHTENS THE AWARENESS OF YOUR OWN PERSONAL METAMORPHOSIS IN YOUR OWN BEING!

MOTH WILL TEACH YOU TO FIND YOUR OWN LIGHT AS A BEACON IN THE DIRECTION YOU SHOULD GO.

MOTH MAKES YOU AWARE OF VERBAL AND NON VERBAL CUES IN COMMUNICATING…ARE YOU REALLY LISTENING REALLY SEEING WHAT IS AROUND YOU.

Anyway this lesson goes on for a bit. You can find the total lesson in Animal Totems Dictionary which you can get from GOOGLE. I never see an animal or a bug without questioning what lesson it brings to me.

    Namaste

I love your post and especially anonymous’s response. I try to believe that there are good things that come out of having cancer and this just might be one of those things.
