Condo conundrum

October 12, 2010

I’m back on the subject of the dysfunctional people who live in our Pacific Grove condo complex. Not everyone there is dysfunctional. But there’s a couple who are ringleaders of an anti-tenant campaign that is making life miserable for our nice tenant and her son.

As much as I hate to say it, these are not nice people, in any way shape or form. Not just on my issue. They are mean and nasty and believe they are entitled over any other owner. Take my word for it.

The husband resigned his board seat in a huff during the discussion surrounding our request to rent the condo for another year. (Renting is against our CC&Rs, but the board can grant exemptions.)

After his resignation, and the board’s subsequent approval of our request, he seems to have stepped up his efforts to organize some of the older, less astute residents. They are being incredibly mean to our tenant, who has been exemplary by all other accounts.

I simply can not understand adults acting in this fashion. I just can not.

It doesn’t appear that we have any recourse, either. It would be helpful to rent it again, but we are certain our tenant wants nothing to do with a third year, and I would hate to inflict these people on another tenant. I know it’s probably part of their strategy, but it’s true.

We have planned to take the place off the rental market when her lease is up in July and use it as our getaway. But the idea of living among these evil people (even on weekends) is horrifying. Riley is grandfathered into the “no pets” scenario, but he does bark and I’m sure that’ll start another movement.

My husband says that the only recourse we have is to make their lives miserable when we start using the condo again.

I just don’t have it in me.

And yet, I’ll be damned if I’ll let them run me or my tenant off.
