Ethnic Catholicism is complicated

March 9, 2011

Ash Wednesday conversation with husband:

Him: I don’t eat meat on Ash Wednesday.

Me: Let me get this straight. You don’t attend Mass, go to confession, get ashes, or pray. We weren’t married in the Church this time. And you don’t eat meat on Ash Wednesday??

Him:
That’s right. I don’t eat meat on Fridays during Lent, either.

Me: What did you give up for Lent?

Him: Chocolate.

Me: But you don’t eat chocolate.

Him: That’s why I gave it up.
