Fill your bowl with roses today

April 24, 2012

Fill your bowl with roses: the bowl, too, have of crystal.

Sit at the western window. Take the sun
Between your hands like a ball of flaming crystal.

Poise it to let it fall, but hold it still,
And mediate on the beauty of your existence;

The beauty of this, that you exist at all.

Bright, hot sun and the first explosion of roses in my garden yesterday reminded me of these lines from Conrad Aiken’s poem, Chiaroscuro Rose. Aren’t the roses spectacular?
