Inexplicable beauty trends

March 12, 2010
Let’s face it. Most of us girls love fashion. We read magazines like Allure, More, Glamour, and I haven’t met a woman yet who doesn’t appreciate a good cosmetic promotion.

Ahem. Does The Clinique Bonus sound familiar? Buy something and get a cosmetic bag full of useless lipsticks and mascaras? It’s like mother’s milk to a young woman.

Anyway, the Academy Awards brought fashion to the forefront this week, so I thought I’d vent about some disturbing beauty trends that just won’t go away.

Don’t these women look dead?
Nude lipstick is a disturbing trend that shows no sign of becoming passe. At least not any time soon.

Even though I came of cosmetic-wearing age in the Swinging Sixties, I still think nude lips make women look like corpses.
Just. Not. Flattering.

Here’s something much more flattering to women.
A brownish berry, still relatively neutral, but not so much so that she looks dead.

A classic, bright red lipstick can be stylish and eye-catching.

I think Rihanna looks great in this pink shade.

And this reddish pink is nice, too.

Browns are another horrifying trend that won’t go away.
Would you kiss that? I didn’t think so.

But add a little wine or pink to a brown and it’s more becoming:
Yes, this one’s borderline, leaning toward Goth, but still, a hair into the “flattering” category and fashionable. At least she doesn’t look like she’s buried her face in chocolate pudding.

Nude lips? Brown lipstick? Dramatic cosmetic trends like these should be left on the runway.

Where they belong.

(That is all.)
