Irish house party video 1

June 11, 2010

The Irish musicians at the house party were really great. This video took forever to upload and I hope it works. It’ll give you an idea of what traditional Irish folk music sounds like.

There are three mainstays of traditional Irish music.

The Uillean pipes are like bagpipes, only there’s no mouthpiece. It’s played with the elbow. The guy on the far left is the piper and I have another video I’ll try to load later that shows him playing it.

The bodrhan is a special kind of frame drum that looks like a big tambourine and is played with a small stick.

And of course, the Irish harp. The harp (rather than the shamrock) is the actual symbol of Ireland and is on all coins minted here.
