Is it soup yet?

October 17, 2009

Campbell’s always got it.

Soup is a comfort food. It soothes and nurtures. It’s healthful. It can be tasty.

But one thing soup isn’t is a hot weather food. It’s hard to enjoy soup when the weather’s hotter than the stew.

I’ve been craving homemade vegetable soup.

And waiting impatiently for the first cool day here in west-central Florida. Where global warming has kept sticky, hot weather here well into the first month of fall.

That day is coming: Sunday. When I opened the door this morning to let Tinker out, I felt it: cooler air. But they say it’ll be really cooler tomorrow.

In our Italian-American culture, Sunday is pasta day. It’s how we grew up.

But this Sunday is soup day.

My shopping list has scads of delicious, nutritious vegetables: broccoli, zucchini, cabbage, cauliflower, green beans, onions, carrots, tomato. A little potato.

I’ll add some garlic and thyme. Seasoned pepper. A scad of kosher salt.

M. will get some fresh-baked, crusty bread, which we’ll heat up. Slap a little butter on it, ladle the soup into big, stoneware bowls, and it’s Sunday lunch.

A meal to warm the body and soothe the soul.
