Letting go

May 31, 2010

To live in this world you must be able to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it against your bones, knowing your whole life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.
-Mary Oliver

I thought of this at the vet clinic the other day when I watched a woman say goodbye to a beloved pet. It made me consider the many different kinds of goodbyes we say in our lifetime.

How hard each and every one is.

How agonizing it is to recognize that the time has come.

And, what a gift it is to be able to let go.

Knowing that the day will come when we have to say goodbye,
we still hold the mortal things in our life
against our bones.

How brave we are!
