Want a totally fun read & romp through an exotic culture??
February 11, 2020
When a story engages me from the first page, when I can’t wait to see what happens next and when I’m sorry to see it end? That’s a book I want to tell you about.
Marriage Unarranged, authored by my social media friend Ritu Bhathal is set in an Indian community in England. I love all things Indian, especially after going there a few years back. It’s exotic (to me!), the culture is so different from ours and of course, marriages and relationships do not happen the same way ours do in America. So that alone is riveting.
Ritu calls it “chick lit with an Indian twist.” I love that! And for me, it was the Indian twist that drew me in.
The book opens with a guy breaking some pretty serious social mores by anyone’s standards, but for his fiancee, Aashi, it was a complete deal breaker. What did she find?
An empty condom box.
And they had decided to wait until after marriage. Oh-oh.
Marriage was OFF — hence, Marriage Unarranged–and the guy was lucky to emerge intact after a visit from her brothers. They were nothing, if not protective of their sister.
Her naivete long gone, Aashi steps forward into what turns out to be more of an adventure than she could have imagined…and the ending turns out to be not an ending at all, but a new beginning. I won’t spoil it for you–buy the book!
Ritu is a good writer who tells an engaging story. Light, but suspenseful, romantic, but modern. I couldn’t put it down.
If it weren’t winter here, I would call it a fun beach read. I found myself reading in the car, in bed and when I should’ve been working. What a light and fun gift for someone!
