Monkeying around with macaques in Morocco

April 24, 2012

I know. The title was irresistible. So there we were on the way to the Sahara when we came across this sight.

They’re macaques, the most widespread kind of primate in the world.

They have a very hierarchical social structure in which higher ranking monkeys can take food right out of lower ranking macaques’ mouths if they need the food.

They are beautiful creatures.

And they’d set up their own little tourist attraction where they took food from tourists.

Most pet and captive macaques carry Herpes B and therefore don’t make good pets. However, kids were feeding these guys. Here’s what these primates REALLY think of tourists:

“I show you my ass.”
