More ancient than Stonehenge

June 16, 2010

Since we still hadn’t our fill of burial sites, we visited the tranquil and serene Clava Cairns.

Cairns are stone igloo-like burial chambers and these date back 4,000 years. Before Stonehenge. Before the Pyramids.

The people in this area were sun and moon worshippers. The cairns were designed to align with the solstice of the sun or moon, which is very cool, considering that they are prehistoric. When the solstice arrives, the sun lines up perfectly with this entry path.

It was awesome to touch the stones and know that 4,000 years ago, prehistoric men put them in place.
