Resting up for a rut: elk cows at Jasper National Park

It’s rutting season and the bull elk are antsy.

Signs everywhere warn that the bulls are very aggressive right now and will attack anything and everything, including a vehicle. So on a little stroll this morning, we were cautious when we ran across this placid harem of elk right on our hotel property. No bull in sight.

These girls (above) are not exactly what come to mind first, when someone says “harem,” but…& see video below.

It was a shame to waste a video on such a restful group. But one cow was chewing away, the only real activity we saw. Here she is, below.
