The word has entered our lexicon in a big way, and probably thanks to The Sopranos.

We Sicilian-Americans know it as a slang term our parents/grandparents used to indicate something that disgusted them. Gave them the creeps.

Sch in Italian is pronounced sk in English.

Likely origin:

“Schivare” means “avoid” and “schifo” means “disgust”.

In case you wondered.
