When we’re feeling low and depressed, many of us turn to a pill as a default solution. But what if all it takes to feel better is a spiritual tune-up?
Ask yourself if these things are true:
1. It’s hard to find the beauty in others or in the world around you.
2. Sadness or hopelessness permeate your life. Or both.
3. Daily life seems to be a series of frustrations.
4. You’re easily angered.
5. You feel disconnected from your higher self.
These are signs you might need a spiritual tune-up. Before calling for an anti-depressant, try these simple actions:
Start each day with a prayer of gratitude or a meditation.
Meditate on an affirmation that presents a positive thought with which to start the day, such as: “I see the beauty all around me.” or “What others do has nothing to do with me.”
Do a kindness for someone else.
Volunteer to read to children in a school. Write out cards for elderly people alone in nursing homes. Cook a meal for a sick friend. Volunteer to walk a dog, give a ride or take someone to the store. There is no end to the need in the world, need that YOU can help fulfill.
Take deep, cleansing breaths when faced with frustrations.
Oxygenating the cells is a calming technique that works well when we’re distressed over anything. You can do this any time, anywhere.
Do some spiritual reading
Whether it’s a book of daily devotionals, the Bible or something else that speaks to you, spiritual reading can take us out of our mundane concerns for a while and put us in touch with our higher purpose. Some people I know carry a small book of devotionals with them, either on their device or in their bag.
And much more:
You can also attend a service, listen to uplifting music, spend time with a close friend, walk your dog, cuddle your cat or do myriad other things that can give you a spiritual lift.
What would you add to this list?

This is one of the most important posts I’ve ever read on your site. This is so common in our lives. It’s so easy to lose sight of what matters and what moves your spirit.
I like to start the day thanking the lord for a healthy family and the love that we receive. I think it’s nice to see the good when the world is covered in such sad news all the time.
I always turn to God when I feel frustrated and angry. Although sometimes, i can’t help it that I blow my top. I need to pray to God more. Thank you for this wake up reminder.
Such great advice. I do meditate each morning before I start my day. Then I do some form of exercise which always centers me. You are so right when I do an act of kindness…….it really does enrich my soul.
Very beautiful! I feel like we so often allow ourselves to only be concerned about the things that we have to get done each day. Bills, work, cleaning, cooking, and we forget to take care of our spiritual needs. It is important to take the time to feel and appreciate and connect with others. Great post!
Meds aren’t always the answer when it comes to these things. Sometimes all we need is to live our life, be more kind, more giving, more eager to experience things. That will definitely lift our spirit and make us look at life so much better.
SO many of us need a spiritual tune up from time to time. I am on a strong spiritual journey as of lately, very conscious of it and I am trying to balance my chakras and be more aware of my purpose here.

These little actions go a long way. So much better than trying to eat, drink or drug your way to happiness.
