Summer livin’s easy with Michelob ULTRA Light Cider
June 18, 2012
I was sitting on the back patio on a hot afternoon watching the dogs play, trying to read a book and craving something light and refreshing to drink. It’s been an unusually hot spring in northern California, and the sun was beating down without mercy.
I love an icy cold beer on a hot day, but that day a beer sounded too heavy. Wine? Wasn’t in the mood. Lemonade? Too sweet. I wanted something tasty, but light. What to drink?
Then, I remembered that Michelob had provided me a brand new product to review: Michelob ULTRA Light Cider. I pulled a cold bottle out of the refrigerator, uncapped it and poured it into a tall glass. The only hard cider I’d ever had was heavy and strong, more like a fall and winter drink. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this 21st century makeover of an old standard.
I took a sip and was pleasantly surprised. This is not your father’s fermented cider. It’s naturally sweetened with stevia, gluten-free and of course, made from fresh, crisp apples. A natural and tasty alternative to beer and wine and far lighter than traditional hard ciders. And, only 4 percent alcohol by volume.
My assessment: I found it delicious: flavorful, crisp, light and perfect for a hot summer day, far better than the ponderous, old-school ciders of the past. Mine was straight up, but it’s also yummy over ice, and even lighter. I liked it. A lot.
And for my gluten-free friends who think that cider has barley and isn’t gluten free? Some ciders DO add barley, but ULTRA does not contain barley and can be safely consumed on a gluten-free diet. And I love the way Michelob has tuned in to our concerns about artificial sweeteners and used stevia in this new drink.
If you’ve never had cider before, it’s a perfect time to try this lighter version. At only 120 calories for a 12 oz. serving, it’s barely a dietary splurge.
I can already see Michelob ULTRA Light Cider taking its place next to beer and soft drinks in a tub full of ice at our summer barbecues. What summer meal or activity do you think would go best with Michelob ULTRA LightCider?
This sounds like something I would like on a hot summer night with a nice entree salad. I love some fruit in my salad and this would go well with that.
