Why this is the time for us to be taking stock

April 1, 2020

taking-stockWhere do we begin?
What marks the start of any new adventure?
And what do we leave behind us when the future calls?  ~Call the Midwife

The virus crisis we’re going through now isn’t the kind of adventure we want to have. We might not have even called it an “adventure” before. But it’s certainly uncharted territory and we are all navigating it as best we can.

Our own mortality lurks–and that offers us an opportunity to take stock of our lives. To reconsider how we spend our time and with whom. To think about what we want to do with the rest of our lives.

We might never again have the time and space to do this.

We can let these weeks go by in fear and anxiety, or we can use them for the deep work of looking inward at what we really want out of our lives.

I’ll leave it with words from last weekend’s episode of Call the Midwife:

“The gift is knowing that the present will soon pass and that the way we embrace it has the power to change everything.”

  1. I love Call the Midwife! Just watched the first episode of the next season already! So many quotable quotes:) Great advice to name this an adventure! I am writing a blog post for parents of teens about this very thing, but you wrote it better-might have to steal your terminology!

A perfect approach to maintaining our sanity. I will share this with my clients who are struggling with emotional eating! Thanks!

Taking stock requires self-honesty and self-reckoning. I’ve always been introspective, so this is a difficult but not shocking time, but this has to be an extremely anxious time for people who never slow down and sit with themselves. It is wonderful that you are providing free resources to help these folks!

I am so far behind on CALL THE MIDWIFE. I love the character of the doctor and of course all the other characters too. They are so real.
