World-class hugging dog

January 5, 2013
What are Australian shepherds like?
Beautiful dogs and just perfect for ranch life.
They’re energetic working dogs, happy all the time, playful,
and most of all, they’re loving.

My Colorado friend, J, got Dex three years ago.
Her elderly Aussie, Zip, whom I knew from puppyhood, was aging
and J was preparing for the inevitable.

Zip passed last year, but Dex has done her best to fill the gap.
Her personality is significantly different.
She’s her own dog, Dex is, and what a lovable cutie!

Besides being an ace Frisbee player,
this Australian shepherd is a world-class hugging dog.
 And I am not kidding.

It was a joy to spend time with her over Thanksgiving.
I miss her fulsome doggie hugs!
It was hard to say goodbye to this sweetie-pie.

Dex, see you again….can’t wait!

  1. I love Aussies–we have a Sheltie, our second, and they’re somewhat related (both descended from border collies). Beautiful dogs, with amazing personalities.

I have only known one Aussie…she wanted attention constantly. And yes she was a great hugger! I don’t really have a hugging dog of my own right now…all my dogs like being petting but are not into hugging. I wish I had an Aussie!

My friend has had Aussies and they are great. I had a Rottweiler and an Irish Wolfhound and when the Wolfhound died the Rottweiler actually took on some of her habits that he had never done before. It was odd like he was trying to fill the void.
