The Case for an Afterlife: A Growing Body of Evidence
Here’s the thing about so-called “skeptics.” They think in limited ways. They act as if the state of science today is how it will always be. But the fact is, science is always changing. Progressing. We are always learning more in ways that make our old rules invalid.
I know scientists who become apoplectic at the idea that there’s an afterlife that science may not completely explain. But as Bertrand Russell once wrote, “We should not go for complete skepticism but degrees of probability.”
For centuries, belief in an afterlife has been seen as a matter of faith. Science, we were told, deals in what can be measured—and consciousness, the very thing that defines us, was thought to die with the body.
But a growing body of research challenges that assumption, suggesting that something about us may persist beyond death.
Our soul.
Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)
Thousands of people who have been clinically dead—no heartbeat, no brain activity—report vivid experiences during that period. Maybe you’ve read some of the books?
They describe leaving their bodies, seeing scenes later verified by medical staff, and encountering deceased relatives. A 15-year study from the University of Southampton found that roughly 40% of patients who survived cardiac arrest described some level of awareness when they were medically “dead.”
If consciousness were solely a brain function, how could perception occur when the brain had stopped?
Truth is, science does not understand how consciousness works. Any surgeon or anesthesiologist will tell. you that.
Children Who Remember Past Lives
The University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies has spent decades investigating children who recall previous lives. Many of these children provide details—names, hometowns, even causes of death—that later check out.
In one well-known case, a child in the U.S. gave over 50 verifiable details about a man who had died decades earlier. Coincidence? Perhaps. But when patterns repeat across thousands of cases, the statistical odds begin to strain disbelief. Coincidence is unlikely.
I’m a past life regressionist and have had many fascinating experiences myself and with clients that appear credible.
Mediumship Under Scientific Controls
Afterlife esearcher Gary Schwartz, PhD, has also been doing fascinating work in this area. I’ve met him and seen him present his scientific studies several times.
Researchers at the Windbridge Research Center have tested mediums under rigorously blinded conditions, with both participants and experimenters unaware of the deceased’s identity. Yet, just as with Dr. Schwartz’ work, in multiple studies, mediums provided specific and accurate information far beyond what chance would predict. Fraud or “cold reading” can’t explain results obtained when no identifying cues are available.
I’ve ready many of these studies; I’ve met many of these researchers. I’ve had readings from most of the most famous and well-regarded mediums, as well as unknowns who rock with their accuracy.
Physics and the Nature of Consciousness
A small but growing number of physicists and neuroscientists are exploring whether consciousness might be a fundamental property of the universe, rather than a byproduct of the brain. Why is this a small group? Because this area of study is open to ridicule by old-school materialist scientists.
Quantum consciousness theories—while controversial—suggest that awareness may be “nonlocal,” meaning it’s not entirely contained in our skulls. If that’s true, then consciousness might not end when the body does.
I believe it does not. I believe our souls go on.
An Open Question
None of this is definitive proof. But the evidence increasingly points to something our ancestors intuited: consciousness may not be extinguished at death. As the data accumulate, the question of an afterlife is becoming less one of faith versus science—and more one of open scientific inquiry.
Perhaps we are on the edge of discovering the truth: that death is not an ending, but a transition into another state of being—one that today’s science is only beginning to glimpse.
But we’ll all know for ourselves in the end.
I’m wondering what you think about all this and also, if you’d like a reading and video list containing some of the afterlife studies, comment below and I’ll send it to you.
Oh–also, if you’d like a past life regression via Zoom, I’ve got special pricing for you. Yes, Zoom works exactly the same way as in person.
Yes, me, too. When I found myself in the ER last week eyeing up the crash cart being stored in front of my cubicle I was strangely anxiety free. I do think shedding this body takes us on our next great adventure and everything I have heard, read and experienced about the afterlife is pretty awesome.
Here you’ll find my blog, some of my essays, published writing, and my solo performances. There’s also a link to my Etsy shop for healing and grief tools offered through A Healing Spirit.
I love comments, so if something resonates with you in any way, don’t hesitate to leave a comment on my blog. Thank you for stopping by–oh, and why not subscribe so you don’t miss a single post?
A fascinating subject but we’ll never know… or maybe we will. I’m interested in NDE experiences. See them a lot on Youtube. They actually comfort me.
