How to enjoy the sweet relief of escapist streaming

escapist-streaming

I love to disappear into mindless, escapist streaming. But I’m still a smart girl.

So…let’s be honest: sometimes the real world is just too much.

The headlines, the heartbreaks, the daily grind—it can all pile up in a way that feels heavy, even suffocating. And in those moments, I find myself reaching not for a self-help book or the evening news, but for something a bit more… indulgent. Enter escapist streaming.

I used to think of it as a guilty pleasure. Now? I see it as self-care. A sweet relief.

There’s something beautifully comforting about a storyline that asks nothing of us but to be entertained. Whether it’s a frothy romantic comedy set in a charming coastal town (OMG do I love those!), a detective series with predictably tidy endings, or a competition show where the only high stakes involve cake—escapist television gives us a safe place to rest our minds.

It doesn’t mean we’re ignoring reality.

It means we’re giving ourselves a break from it. And breaks are important. They allow us to come back to our lives with a little more energy, maybe a little more optimism, even a laugh or two tucked in our back pockets.

And sometimes, amidst the glossy surfaces and outrageous plot twists, there are even unexpected truths. Lessons about resilience, hope, friendship, or the joy of reinventing ourselves—wrapped in sparkly packages that are far easier to digest than yet another grim headline.

So no, I don’t feel guilty anymore when I queue up my favorite feel-good series. I lean into it. I let the escapism wash over me like a warm bath. Because in a world that demands so much, choosing a little joy is a radical act.

And honestly? I think we’ve earned it.

I find myself enjoying mindless television more than ever. Although some of the shows (The Morning Show or Marie Antoinette on PBS) aren’t completely mindless. I like to feel I’m also learning something

I’m discouraged with TV right now. I haven’t cut the cord on cable because I get the bundled service from Comcast — TV, internet, and a landline. One of the big reasons I keep cable TV is I like late night programs, especially Steven Colbert. Now that his program is being cancelled, I’m very upset. I do have Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and I had Peacock for a while, I haven’t been into streaming much. I did enjoy “Madam President” and “The Ambassador.” I watched “The Handmaiden’s Tale” up until where the book ended, then I quit. It was just too hard to watch.
