Beautiful Tarpon Springs on a beautiful winter day

January 27, 2012

Earlier this week I had lunch with a friend on the water in the beautiful fishing village of Tarpon Springs, Fla. Its known for sponge fishing, which seems to be done solely by bronzed Greek men wearing anachronistic diving suits. You can just make out the suit–barely–on the fisherman above. These boats load up with tourists for a short jaunt into the bay, where fishermen wow the crowd with their diving prowess. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Tampa Bay area.

As you can see, it was a beautiful day to have lunch on the patio of Dmitri’s. Just lovely. It’s been wonderful to connect with my Florida friends again and to visit many of my favorite spots on this, my second annual visit to my second home. (P.S. I had souvlaki, one of my favorite Greek dishes. And some of that fabulous lemony soup. I do have Greek heritage, by the way.)
