The emotional violence of needing to be right

January 15, 2026

being-rightThere is a violence in the way some people insist on being right. Of aggressively insisting their view prevail.

They don’t just want to be understood—they want to dominate. They talk over, shout down, humiliate. Their words become hammers, pounding. Their goal is to browbeat until the other person finally gives up. Sometimes the target of the attack does–not convinced, only exhausted.

It’s emotional violence.

What about this need to be right even at the expense of another’s spirit?

It isn’t about truth. It’s about power.

The need to be right at all costs is the refuge of the fragile ego—the one terrified of being wrong or of losing face or of admitting uncertainty. So it blusters. It bullies. It confuses volume with validity.

But truth doesn’t need to shout. It doesn’t need to crush or humiliate. Truth stands on its own, steady and unafraid. The louder someone insists on being right, the more they reveal their fear that they are not.

We live in a time where too many would rather win than understand. But winning at any cost leaves ashes in its wake—relationships broken, empathy silenced, hearts closed.

If we want a world worth living in, we have to stop mistaking cruelty for conviction. The courage we need now is not the courage to be right, but the courage to listen. To be humble. To choose connection over conquest.

Because being right means nothing if you’ve destroyed someone’s spirit proving it.

Thank you, Carol. YOur words are so important. It’s sometimes difficult to resist responding emotionally and leave space for someone else to feel heard. Even when we disagree.
