The S cookies of my childhood

childhood

These are S cookies, a remnant of my childhood.  Just about every week my grandfather would walk in the door with small white boxes of cookies from Savoia bakery.

The bakery was just down the street from the modest apartment where my grandparents lived, and while Papa didn’t drive (the story was he’d had an accident as a young man and never drove again), his friend “Curly” would take him anywhere he needed to go. Including to Savoia. And of course, he was proficient with the bus.

Everyone loved the round Linzer-style cookies with raspberry filling in the center he brought, but the plain S cookies spoke my name. It wasn’t so much the taste, as it’s mild, but the texture. The consistency.

Just perfect for dunking in a glass of milk or a cup of coffee.

I bought this batch in December when I was at our place in Rochester, NY to carry back to California in my suitcase. In fact, I bought out all they had left on the tray, maybe two dozen.  They freeze like a dream and I still have half a dozen in my California freezer.

Smaller now than they were in my childhood, but still the same look, the same taste.

And the same feeling of “home.”

What reminds YOU of YOUR childhood?

OMG YES!!! I loved these cookies growing up and my mom would make them- or later get them from Savoia! Thanks for the childhood memory and family connection! x

Oh yum. I can almost taste them.

These are my favorite passages to read. Loving memories of childhood. Snickerdoodles – I made them once (my mother never baked) and the cinnamon has stayed with me my whole life.
