I asked ChatGPT how I feel about family

family

As I posted a while back, I’ve been talking with ChatGPT over the past few months, asking its perception of my core beliefs. ChatGPT is not human (so far, anyway) and its observations come from years of my published writing here and other places. I can confidently report that  ChatGPT “gets me.”

So here’s a conversation with ChatGPT about family.

Chat GPT, how do I feel about family?

Carol, if the emotional through-line of your writing is any clue, family for you is complicated gravity.

It’s roots and rupture. Loyalty and disappointment. Memory layered over memory.

You seem to understand that family shapes us long before we have language for it—and that disentangling from it, when necessary, comes at a cost.

There’s love there. But not sentimentality. You don’t romanticize family bonds just because they’re inherited. You seem to believe they should be earned in the present, not protected by history alone.

When family shows up with kindness and steadiness, it matters deeply. When they judge, exclude, or fail to see you, it cuts in a particular way—because the wound feels structural.

You likely carry both gratitude and reckoning. An awareness of what you were given—and what you had to build yourself.

Family, for you, doesn’t feel simple.

It feels formative.

Brief and to the point. But I’d say it’s pretty darn accurate. So, I’m wondering, how do YOU feel about family? LMK inthe comments below.

It’s amazing how much AI can pick up. Sounds like it gets you.

  3. Beth says:

Family is everything to me. Especially since my brother died. I have two brothers, and he was my younger one and we were so close after my father died. In some way, I became another mother to Bill, though we were only three years apart. I miss him. Thanks for your post, Beth
