Blue Heaven

January 22, 2009

Yesterday I re-hung some sweet little watercolors I’d bought years ago on one of our many Christmases in Key West. It reminded me how much I love that island imagery, so I went looking online for Key West watercolors I might like, and found this wonderfully evocative watercolor called Blue Heaven.

I thought the title was a sign–I once wrote a narrative poem called Blue Heaven while sitting at Nepenthe in Big Sur. It was back in 1997, my birthday. I was sitting in Tampa painfully homesick for California. So on the spur of the moment, I booked a flight and 24 hours later I was sitting in front of the fireplace at Nepenthe writing that poem.

I don’t usually write poetry, but it’s one of my most favorite pieces of writing. Maybe I’ll post it one day. But this watercolor captures the Key West spirit, doesn’t it?
