The gifts of growing older

growing older

We fear it. But growing older is not a burden, though the world often tries to tell us otherwise. It is, instead, a slow unfolding of gifts that only time can give.

Yes, I know. It’s hard to view it that way when our bodies falter. And our minds, too. But hear me out:

One of the best gifts of growing older is perspective. With years comes the ability to see life in softer focus. We no longer chase every urgency or worry over every minor stumble. We learn to let things pass, to recognize what is worth our precious energy and what is not. We’re much better at setting boundaries.

Another gift is resilience. The heartaches, losses, and challenges we’ve weathered become part of our strength. They carve wisdom into our bones. They make us steady, rooted, and able to withstand storms that once might have swept us away. Don’t underestimate this! Just think back to how things threw us for a loop when we were younger.

There is also the gift of authenticity. The older we grow, the less we feel the need to pretend. Most of us, anyway. We slip out of costumes we wore to please others and grow comfortable in our own skin. It is a freedom youth rarely knows.

And perhaps the sweetest gift is savoring. I love this part of it, where we appreciate everything so much more because we know our time with these things is limited. Age teaches us the beauty of the ordinary—the warmth of a morning sunbeam, the comfort of a shared laugh, the hush of evening. We understand more deeply that these small things are not small at all; they are life itself.

Yes, our bodies change. Our hair silvers, our steps may slow. But within us, the light grows steadier, brighter. Each passing year is not something stolen from us, but something added—an expansion of heart, of wisdom, of presence.

Growing older is a blessing. A gift. A chance to shine in ways we never could when we were young.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. How about you? What are your thoughts on growing older?
