Nobody wants to talk to you

July 16, 2011

It’s true.

Nobody wants to talk to you. In fact, they go out of their way to avoid it. Especially corporations whose services you use.

Have you ever tried to find a way to contact Yahoo? Don’t bother. There IS no way.

How about AT&T’s landline service? Forget it.

Airlines? Finding a human takes a while. You can have a long, frustrating, convoluted conversation with an automated voice, instead, though.

Facebook help? Just hope you don’t need it, because you aren’t going to find it.

Kinda makes me long for Dell’s Indian call center, one of the most incompetent customer “service” interfaces I have ever encountered and the single reason I would never, ever buy a Dell again.

But at least it’s live.

The most disturbing trend in customer service–or more accurately, customer dis-service–is the way big service providers distance themselves from their customers. These companies just don’t care about us.

And there seems to be little we can do about it.

Who would you nominate for best–and worst–customer service?

(Oh, and PS. While this was sitting in my queue, consumer advocate Chris Elliott published this:)

The best service I ever had was at a Ritz Carlton in Phoenix. Everyone from the doorman to the front desk knew how to treat a guest. The best unexpected good service is the local In-N-Out in Fremont. Incredible service.

The worst? The phone company. But it’s Saturday and I don’t want to get worked up.
