Ode to Glenn Beck

June 18, 2009

My dear Republican friends, I simply can not resist this…

…you must excuse me this ode, which came to mind after a discussion with FLH about Glenn Beck. With apologies to Mr. Ginsberg, may he rest in peace.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
Republican madness, Mormons starving for intelligent company
hysterical in their sexism naked in their racism
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn
looking for a fix of anger

angelheaded A-holes burning for the ancient heavenly
connection to the Ken Starr-y dynamo in the machinery of night,
who abhor poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat
up smoking expensive illegal Cuban cigars in the supernatural darkness of
country clubs floating across the tops of cities in private jets
jazzed with negativity and hate
who bared what was left of their brains to Heaven under the El and
wearing hooded white robes shot at Mohammedan angels staggering on tenement roofs illuminated,
who passed through universities with radiant cool eyes
hallucinating Arkansas and Blake-light tragedy
critiquing the scholars of war….
-with abject apologies to Allen Ginsberg

(the original excerpt:)
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn
looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly
connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat
up smoking in the supernatural darkness of
cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities
contemplating jazz,
who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and
saw Mohammedan angels staggering on tenement roofs illuminated,
who passed through universities with radiant cool eyes
hallucinating Arkansas and Blake-light tragedy
among the scholars of war,
-from Howl/Allen Ginsberg
