What’s happened to mainstream journalism?

May 21, 2011
This is what has happened to mainstream journalism:
This is not a supermarket tabloid. It’s the well-respected San Jose Mercury News, my hometown newspaper. Trying to get readers. This week.

It reminds me of the old joke:

“What kind of girl do you think I am?”
“I think we’ve settled that; now we’re just arguing about the price.”

The bills must be paid.

I don’t know how newspapers, a slow medium, can compete
in today’s 24 hour news environment.

But I do know that re-hashing material we’ve
already read online (12 or more hours ago)
using sensational tabloid headlines that include exclamation marks!
is probably not the way.
