How to do the scary thing: like move to the South of France
January 6, 2025
No, not me. Not that I’m unfamiliar with do the scary thing.
So many of us wish we could live abroad. Especially these days. So sharing a great blog post from my friend, Dr. Margaretha Montagu — about a woman who had the courage to do the scary thing. Her story is below.
But also sharing a bit about Margaretha’s retreats. And yes, she’s a doctor. But she lives in the south of France and runs amazing retreats there. All kinds. Including some that involve HORSES. Most solo. All slow and sustainable, she says. Don’t they sound wonderful?
It makes me weak with longing to even think of it. I dream of attending one–in fact, I’m looking for like-minded women who might be interested in joining me! Read more about about the retreats here.
What about the woman who threw caution to the wind and moved abroad?
Denise G attended a retreat and was inspired to completely change her life and move to the south of France. And you can find her story below:
“Let me start by saying: I never planned to move to France. Heck, I didn’t even plan to leave my job. I was one of those “stick to the schedule, keep your head down, and don’t rock the boat” types. You know, the kind of person who doesn’t even cross the street until the little green man shows up on the pedestrian light. But somewhere between yet another soul-sucking audit and the realisation that I’d just spent an entire decade colour-coding spreadsheets, something inside me snapped….” read the rest of it HERE
Oh yes, I had dreams of doing just that …. still have … but then again, I already live in an idyllic place so think I might be staying put, for now at any rate… 😊
This is very interesting and fascinating. I would love to walk part of the camino. I have gone to a retreat in the south of France. It is for writers, run by a friend who lived in Portland and also moved to the south of France. I need to learn more about it all. Thank you for sharing this.
How wonderful. I took a trip with girlfriends to Provence and found it amazing. I’d go back anytime. As for living there, with our current political climate, don’t tempt me.
The idea is tempting, but my time is past. I love where I live now, a walkable beach town close to big cities. The only negative is $$$. I settle for spending time in foreign places, like currently three weeks in Mexico. I so admire folks who take the leap!
Here you’ll find my blog, some of my essays, published writing, and my solo performances. There’s also a link to my Etsy shop for healing and grief tools offered through A Healing Spirit.
I love comments, so if something resonates with you in any way, don’t hesitate to leave a comment on my blog. Thank you for stopping by–oh, and why not subscribe so you don’t miss a single post?

You already live in your own little piece of paradise, Miss L!

Yes, I also found it interesting…both Margarethe’s retreats and the courage of the woman who movved!
Thanks so much for sharing this, Carol!
Thanks for letting me! I loved it.
I’m ready!
I am more than ready!

France has its own challenges with the right wing–many gov’ts across the world are heading in this direction. Sadly.

I keep thinking about a move to Maui.
